I’m not a Mac user so this may be irrelevant but I generally store documents in Google Drive and I have an external hard drive to back up other things like music etc. They’re so cheap now, it’s like $99 for 1TB.
I felt the storage issues in my BONES - I generate really big files as part of my work and my university has decided they're too cheap to provide unlimited Google drive storage anymore, which is what I and a lot of students have relied on. So now I have to migrate all ~800 GB I've generated over the course of my PhD to something else. I have an alternative, but it isn't really what I wanted to be thinking about as I try to wrap everything up.
I teach visual artists, so I try to fill my lecture notes with—you know—VISUALS. And yet, my Canvas site is limited to 500 measly megabytes. MADDENING. (Congrats on finishing, btw!)
Preface - If I were you, I wouldn't accept tech support advice from a rando over the Internet...
I'm a long time fan of CBB all the former Earwolf/Stitcher pods, et al, 54, married w/ kids and have been in IT for 30 years, and somehow now a WW substack subscriber.
I don't use a Mac personally, but most of my family uses them, on my advice, and since Apple charges outrageously for storage space, everyone has the same gripes about running out of disk space. There are ways around this if you are comfortable trusting the cloud. While you will have to keep paying higher fees for cloud storage over time, there are ways to either automate, or make it easier, for your files to go cloud-only, still be accessible as needed on your Mac, and free up the space locally without making you go crazy.
iCloud is supposed to manage that for you smartly but isn't exactly great about it. OneDrive on PC makes it simple, but is probably clunky on a Mac. If you get a Dropbox storage account, it might do the trick. You can right click (2 finger click on the touchpad) on any folder and make it 'online only' You still see the files on your local PC but they're really in the cloud only. When you click to open one it syncs back down locally so you can open it seamlessly. This frees up potentially a ton of space on your PC but the user experience (as long as you having a working Internet connection) is that you suddenly have a ton of free local space since your data is living in the cloud.
I am very sorry for the circumstances that led to Janie's rage in this episode, but please know that the sheer number of "FUCKS" brought me great joy as I walked my dog. Your rage was not for naught!
My wife Nicole has the same deal with staying up way too late in bed because that’s her only time available to herself to mindlessly scroll on her phone. Something we all enjoy lol
I think you and Paul nailed it. It’s a conscious avoidance/self sabotage. I think it’s also a common adhd pitfall which is her whole deal.
You hoped that someone would get something out of the podcast delay? Well, I finally got all my dishes washed and even cleaned the whole sink area while listening and felt so accomplished
I've ran into disk space trouble with my mac too! For me, it was that my apps (especially adobe premiere) were taking it all up with years worth of temp files and it made exporting super slow. If that's also happening, you can go into settings and change the media cache and scratch disk to be in a folder on your external hard drive instead of on your computer (and delete the old cache). It's real dumb and can be hard to find, but it might help with disk space 😄
The monthly episode remains and is always ad-supported. The paid subscription offerings are never ad-supported but rather listener supported. Thank you for subscribing!
“I’m a real ‘die in my sleep’ kinda gal”
“That’s the dream!!”
I completely agree!

Thanks for the pod!

I haven't listened to this one yet, just wanted to say I love Paul in the new episode of Invincible. So funny, glad to see him join such a great cast!
Co-Signed!

I love that Bryan Safi and Josh Safdie have merged in Paul’s mind into Julia Fox superfan Brian Safdie.
This episode did something for me...and I am somebody! 😁

Loved the episode but this week’s paid feed has ads in it. Are they supposed to be ad-free?

Hi have you ever talked about places you guys like in Charleston? I’m bringing a whole ass family (9ish?)
Have so much fun! 9 is a big group. My advice is to secure meal reservations now.
