As someone who was also the (same) age where Titanic hit the "sweet spot," I clearly remember there was a LOT of talk about Kate Winslet's "size" at the time, which she has commented about a number of times since. So unfortunately that guy in your class wasn't alone in voicing that opinion, which seemed crazy to me then (and certainly now).
I'm from Dallas and that's where I was when it came out. As a town in the 90s, it was crazy toxic about women's bodies, and I heard that shit everywhere. What astonished me amor the story was that the guy was Canadian?! Like, really not expected.
Your grad school stories are always so funny because of the overlap for me. I know exactly what you're talking about. Waiting for you to bring up Bubba's fried chicken and McFarlin auditorium. Dallas was a really weird and special place in the 90s.
Thanks, Carl! At this time, the regular monthly STAY F. HOMEKINS episodes are ad-supported and will not go behind a paid subscription. That said, bonus content we produce is listener/reader supported.
I wonder if the lifeguard was fully clothed because a) he probably has other duties and does those until someone needs the pool and b) because if he changed, I think it would feel a little ridiculous. Like he's recognizing the fact that the pool is 4 ft. deep and because he's fully clothed he's showing you both know you're not going to drown, and that it's just a legality thing?
Regardless super weird 😂
Even hotels I've been to with a full sized pool haven't had lifeguards, they just had a sign that said "no lifeguard on duty"
Also when you started talking about being hyper aware of how long you had been swimming, it reminded me of this text a friend of mine showed me recently:
"Consider also that you're a woman and you've been socialized to be overly friendly (I have too!) And we tend to try and manage the emotions of a situation before we even enter it"
I bet he wasn't even really paying attention to you, or the time spent swimming! I honestly bet he was just happy to be sitting down because as someone who's spent over a decade in food service and retail, those moments are few and far between!
When I lived in New Jersey I had a best friend. I was really sad to move away in 4th or 5th grade, but after we moved to Atlanta he came and visited during a summer vacation. One of my favorite memories of that visit was when we made a silly Star Trek movie on my dad's 8mm movie camera. It was really bad. He played Captain Kirk, and I did some stop-motion effects with a model of the Enterprise bridge, and I even tried to do some phaser effects by scratching the individual frames of film with a needle. After he went home I don't think we ever heard from each other again.
A few years ago I was reading the latest issue of The Atlantic magazine. There's this famous movie director - he made The Usual Suspects, The X-Men, Star Trek: Nemesis, Bohemian Rhapsody, a bunch of others. The article said he was a graduate of WWPHS, class of '84, and that he started making 8mm films when he was 12 years old. He has also been accused of molesting a bunch of underage boys.
Of course I'm talking about Bryan Singer. I think I'm the guy who got him into making movies. I don't remember him ever touching me inappropriately, so I can't say I'm the guy that got him interested in that whole scene, though.
Linda Kasabian was the one Manson follower who went to the Sharon Tate house but didn't commit any of the murders (she claimed she was waiting in the car at the bottom of the driveway while the others went inside). it probably saved her from a prison term when she later flipped on the killers and testified against them at trial
Hi Brittany -- the recaps on that show will be posted after the actor's strike! So, keep checking this space, we are saving them to roll out when we are allowed to! Our regular podcasts will be out on the monthly schedule and any bonus content will be announced! THANK you for subscribing AND for hanging in there with us, we really appreciate it. xo
OMG of course!!!! That makes SO much sense! I’m sorry!!!!! Just watching that show like “holy cow what are the Haddad-Tompkins’ going to say about this!!!!” Stupid jerk studios! Workers unite!
I always get infinity pools mixed up with endless pools because the words are so similar

What’s the palm springs song?
I looked for it after listening and found one by Virginia to Vegas, but I thought they said the artist and that's not it. Still a bop, though!
It’s called PALM SPRING JOE’S NUMBER TWO by Jill Sobule
Thank you!!
Hey y'all, maybe just a bit of a snafu bcuz of vacay, but it should be the ad-free version in subscribers' feeds, no? I got the ads this time.

I’m literally listening to this in our Endless Pool! This is so weird!

I laughed so hard so many times this spring episode. Thanks for recording one when you were on a vacation.

Are more episodes coming? :( I’m dying to hear thoughts on the latest episodes of AJLT!
