sorry i'm late in catching up with this ep but funny thing about the Oscars, especially now that there's another strike on but... in addition to being conceived as a big annual marketing event for motion pictures to the world, the Academy was also the studios attempt to keep the talent from unionizing (didn't work ultimately)
and it's only been recently that the indies came to dominate Best Picture (after the studios stopped making Oscar movies, essentially, in the shift to IP/tentpoles). until the 2000s there used to be a stronger correlation between box office popularity and Oscar noms/wins. studios could totally dominate the Oscars again if they chose to invest in those kind of movies the way they used to
OMG I finally have a place to talk about this podcast! So Paul was right about Karen originating in the Black community. There's a long history of us collectively naming these types of women. Becky was an earlier term and is still used when speaking of a younger white woman. But Karen was adopted for the older, "call the manager/police over my mild inconvenience" version. As with much American slang, it was co-opted and now everyone uses the term without knowing the origin.
The submarine section had me laughing so loud people were staring at me (I was grocery shopping). I hadn't even recovered from the "if by family annihilator you mean..." section.
Hey do you guys benefit from people listening to the podcast specifically on substack?
I only ask because my default "Stay F Homekins" listening app is still Stitcher, and I prefer their media player controller, but if it boosts you guys to listen to it here I'll definitely make the switch.
As someone who works for a certain chain coffee shop that will not be named, calling problem customers “Karens” predates the pandemic by at least a couple years, but it really took off online in 2020.
Also, Paul, I saw on Instagram you’re watching all of classic Doctor Who and I’m very excited for your journey! I did that ten years ago in the lead up to the 50th anniversary, and it’s a trip. Especially if you pair it with learning about some of the behind the scenes shenanigans.
Great ep as always, guys! If you're interested, I'd highly recommend the George Burns autobiography, "Gracie: A Love Story." Not only is it a fascinating look at the evolution of comedy in the first half of the 20th century, from vaudeville to radio to television, but it's also a really beautiful story about their life together. (And no, he never remarried.)
Really? Yeah, I did. I'm a family annihilator and I'm proud to say, I murder family members in a unique way.
This month I learned the Sinai peninsula, south of Canaan, used to be part of a region known as Egypt. Which makes me think about the fact that the English word for America is different than the Spanish word for the USA. And a person from Canada is referred to as "Canadiense" in Mexico. So it's possible 273 countries each have 273 unique names for the same place meaning there are 74,529 country names. (There would be less because not every country has it's own language, but Mexico has two different spellings in the Latin world, so figure that one out.) Why don't we call places the name of the place the people who inhabit that place want it to be called? Because we are descendants of the peoples who stole that land, not the ones who settled it. (Unless you are an Israelite, but I'm pretty sure Israel is just the name of our planet in the English translation of the Lord's words.) Also, if Herod didn't get insecure about his title, he wouldn't have tried to murder "Yahshua" and then maybe lions would lay with lambs and all people could worship together in harmony. Why the Lord would allow the man looking over Israel to be so ignorant as to be threatened by the true coming of the King of his people, is not something I'm capable of answering. Next month I'll try to come up with som stuff for my free online magazine "Softcore Guitar" which looks like a guitar aficionado magazine, but is actually a men's interest magazine with ironic articles about: politics, music, fashion, movies and tech; and real articles about fitness, nutrition, aacademia and Religion/Theology/Spirituality. Also with public domain images of women in lingerie to move units, create buzz and stop giving Scott Aukerman an excuse to look at panty fetish porn (I'm just kidding, I don't know what kind of pornography Scott Aukerman looks at, I'm just trying to figure how to get good at "viral marketing.")
Sorry for commenting before finishing the ep, I just got excited. Good episode so far guys!
I know this is super old, but I’m crying laughing at Janie saying “I may have said the words (HUGE pause)… I’m being bamboozled”
“Would you ever go on a submarine?”
“Yes”
“What if that was how you died? Would you regret it?”
Janie you kill me. Lol

Ack I’ve been missing out because Substack silently logged me out of the app so I haven’t gotten notifications!

Wienermobile Oscar heist movie should be called "And the Wiener Is..."

As half of a professional couple who works together thank you, Janie and Paul for sharing your on and off mic truths.

No not that I’m aware of, but thank you for asking. Please listen with your preferred method.
I love how you guys are like "we don't have time to get into that we have to go!!" And I look and there's like 22 minutes left on the podcast 😂

Right after your podcast, I listened to you on Shut Up I Love It. I, too, loved The Split - and watched it on your recommendation!
Here’s the first time I heard a breakdown of “Karen” https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/otm/segments/who-karen-and-why-does-she-keep-calling-police-black-men-on-the-media Aloha Ya’ll

Paul is talking about an acrostic poem:
Friendly guy
Also really into honor
More than is healthy
In fact, considerably more than is healthy
Like probably thinks samurai are phonies
You'd be surprised how into honor I am
And will murder people because of it
Not until I almost get caught
Never before the consequences
If you don't believe me, why?
Hard to believe murders don't have principles
Instead of Warrior, who have "integrity"
Lol, I'm not comparing myself to war heroes
Actually that's exactly what me, Alex, is doing
Trigger snowflakes, I'm used to using triggers
Or did I?
Really? Yeah, I did. I'm a family annihilator and I'm proud to say, I murder family members in a unique way.

I KNEW someone would do it. 👏🏼
